How to change the interface language of SIM Manager (SIMple)

We care about Dekart users and understand that even simple tasks are easier when performed in native language. That's why we translated Dekart SIM Manager in 11 languages.

If you go to Dekart Downloads Page , you'll see that there are different installation packs for Dekart SIM Manager . Just choose your language and install. That's all :) What to do if you installed English version but you'd feel yourself more comfortable with the program in other language?

That's not a problem at all! Go to Options -> Settings

Mobley PIN Change - Dekart SIM Reader Use Case

The SIM is the subscriber identity module that can be used to connect to mobile network not only phones but smart watches, computers, cameras and many others - this is part of Internet of Things (IoT). What to do if one of these gets locked?

Background:
Some time ago AT&T with the help of ZTE offered very attractive unlimited mobile plan that could be used with Mobley Mobile Hotspot. The Mobley will plug in to any modern car with an OBD-II system and help make a connection between your mobile devices and the powerful AT&T network. The offer was so hot that many users decided to take the SIM card from Mobley to their home routers. But after one of the updates the SIM card got locked.

One of our customers had this exact issue and he could fix it easily with the Dekart SIM Reader and SIM Manager . Here is Ed's story:

I was so pleased with the MOFI 4500, that I decided to purchase a second one. Of course
my updated SIM card would not work in the new MOFI since the PIN was unknown. Since
I didn't have an old phone or another router to create a new PIN, I was stuck. Side bar... The
MOFI does have a place to enter the PIN for the SIM card, but it does not have the capacity
to ask for the PUK number and then update a PIN number.

My research told me that some SIM card readers with associated software would allow you
to create a new PIN number. I ordered a very cheap SIM reader from eBay and it was just that,
CHEAP. The SIM slot was a joke so I ended up trashing it out of fear that I would damage my
SIM card. Plus the free software didn't instill confidence that I would be able to change the PIN.

Looking farther, I came across the Dekart brand reader and software . The description on the
software said that it could "change the PIN number" among other things. Not cheap by any
means, but cheaper than buying some kind of unneeded router or old phone to do the job. I
found that the price on Amazon, because of free shipping, was cheaper than ordering direct
from the factory, so I ordered one.

I had already downloaded the software and manual from the factory site by the time the device
arrived. It doesn't ship with the required registration key, or any other information as it turns out.
An email exchange with Dekart's customer service will get the required key for the software. At
the same time, I exchanged a couple more emails with them and was pleasantly surprised with
their customer service.

After the software was ready and the SIM installed in the reader, it was the moment of truth.
Although the manual's instructions looked simple enough, I was a little nervous, since I know
absolutely nothing about this sort of thing. As soon as the software started, it asked for my PIN
number. After three incorrect guesses, it popped up a window asking for a PUK number and right
below that was a space for a new PIN. It took maybe thirty seconds to write a new PIN to my
SIM card. I could have just stopped there, but I clicked the "read" button, which zipped though a
bunch of stuff and read the card. Clicking on "PIN", it showed my new PIN number, so I knew I was
home free.

I installed the updated SIM in the new MOFI 4500, filed in the new PIN number and it's working
perfectly. I wish the process had costs less than $39.00 but it did what I wanted and I'm happy.
On the upside, I have at least two friends that would like to update their PIN so maybe they will
buy me a burger for the service and help me recoup my investment.

How to recover a deleted SMS with SIM Manager

We get daily support requests on recovering deleted SMS with Dekart SIM Manager. Why 'deleted' is not always 'lost' and what are the conditions of successful recovery?

Recovering a deleted SMS is something many of us need to do from time to time. This guide explains when undeleting an SMS is possible, which tools are required and how the process works. One doesn't need to be a forensic detective, or a suspecting spouse in order to need such a feature; you'll be surprised to see that most companies that offer SIM card recovery tools use sample screenshots with an undeleted SMS saying something like "he is not coming back tonight, let's do it again" or "last night was great". Let's give humanity a chance.

Undeleting a SMS is what normal people need too, from time to time you receive important data via SMS (an address, a phone number) or write such data to one and save it in the outbox (ex: a password, a PIN, etc) in order to retrieve it later – this is where a deleted SMS can be a problem. A SIM card recovery tool is handy in such cases.

How SMS are deleted

In order to recover an SMS, we need to understand how they are deleted. The SIM card has a special file where the SMS are stored, the file has several "slots" in it, each slot holds a message. The number of slots is finite, i.e. a SIM card can store 20 or 25 SMS (depending on the capacity, newer cards have more slots). When all the slots are filled, you have to delete an old SMS before you can save a new one.

The structure of one such slot is made of several fields, such as: the phone number of the sender, the date and time the SMS was received, the text of the message itself. There are other fields which are not shown to us, one of them is the state of the current slot, which can be either "empty", or "in use".

Here is a picture that illustrates a SIM card with 4 SMS slots, all of which are in use.

Some phones will delete an SMS by setting the value in the "state" field to "free", leaving the other fields intact. When a new SMS is received, the phone will verify whether free slots exist, and if they do – they'll be used to store the new SMS. Until a new SMS arrives and the "marked as free" space is not needed – the SMS can be recovered, by simply changing the "state" field back to "in use" using a tool such as SIM Manager and a SIM card reader . This is what the SMS file looks like when a message was "marked as deleted":

In contrast, other phones will not only alter the "state" field, but they will also overwrite the other fields with some default value, immediately after the message was deleted.

How SMS are recovered

By now it should be clear that in order to recover a deleted SMS, all you have to do is change the state of the SMS to "in use", and the phone will happily display that message.

SIM Manager will display the messages that were "marked as deleted" in red, to make sure that you see them, enable the "Show deleted SMS" option in Options\Settings.

If you see one such SMS, right-click it and press "Undelete". Alternatively, you can press "Wipe" and make sure that it cannot be recovered.

Here is a screenshot which shows a real life SIM card with 20 SMS slots, 4 of which contain messages, but only the first two are in use, the last two are marked as deleted:

Below is another screenshot, made with a forensic analysis tool called SIM Explorer , which illustrates the raw data of the SIM card besides the interpreted human-readable representation; the tool is mostly used to gather electronic evidence from SIM cards, but in our case we'll use it to take a look at the guts of the card and understand how SIM card recovery works.

Note how the "00" in the beginning means "free", while "07" means "in use". The first two messages will be shown by the phone, the following two messages are not going to be shown by the mobile phone – but you can see that the actual contents of the message is still physically on the card, therefore the SMS can be recovered. The rest of the file are the empty slots. Note that they not only have "00" in the beginning, but the rest is filed with "FF FF" – which is the default value for a wiped message.

Finally, you need a SIM card reader , which acts as an interface between the SIM card recovery software and the SIM card itself. Here is en example of one such device:

When is it impossible to recover a deleted SMS?

Unfortunately things are not as simple as getting a SIM card reader and a copy of SIM Manager , there is one more detail – does your phone delete the message, or does it only mark it as deleted?

The problem is that different mobile phone companies do it their way, and you can't know what your case is unless you actually give it a try, because none of the companies writes about this in the description of their products.

Finally, there is another detail – many new phones have the habit of storing the SMS in their own memory, rather than on the SIM card. In that case, the solution described here does not apply, because each phone manufacturer has it their way. There are cases in which the phone will use its own memory for SMS storage, and when it gets full – the new SMS will be stored on the SIM card.

There is no certain way of telling guessing how a phone behaves, therefore you should study your phone's habits and see for yourself. It is also a good idea to develop the custom to save the important message to the SIM – to maximize the chance to recover the deleted SMS if things go wrong.

How many old SMS can I recover?

This depends on how many slots there are. The general rule is that you should try to recover the SMS as soon as you know that it was deleted. If you don't do that, the slot marked as empty can be overwritten with a new message when you receive one – you don't want that.

If you're dealing with very important data, consider turning the phone off – to exclude the possibility that a new SMS will be received.

What is FDN mode and who can use it?

Are you a parent anxious about your child or a business who needs to restrict employees from using company phones for personal use or from calling abroad? In this case, this article is for you.

Almost every SIM card has the Fixed Dialing Numbers service mode. The user can create a 'white list' of numbers, enable the FDN mode and the phone (in fact the SIM) will allow outgoing calls to these numbers only.
The short FAQ:

Will the incoming calls work as usual? - Yes, anyone can call you.
Can I call the emergency number if the FDN is activated? - Yes, the emergency calls (112, 911 etc) are the exception to the rule.
How many FDN numbers can be registered? - As many as the SIM card can hold, there is no limitation in the SIM Manager.
Will it work on the iPhone? - Yes, you can restrict the outgoing calls on iPhone.
Will it work on the Android? - Yes, you can limit the outgoing calls on Android, and on any other phone.
Will it work if the SIM is moved to another phone? - Yes, the settings are saved to the SIM card and don't depend on the phone it's used with.
Does my SIM have the FDN mode? - Contact your mobile operator and ask if the FDN is supported by your mobile network.

What do I need to use FDN?

The SIM menu has the FDN feature hidden somewhere inside, the exact place can differ depending on the phone model and the mobile OS. If you're for more universal approach and prefer interacting with big computer screen and full-size keyboard instead of typing on the tiny keypad, then you'll need:

a sim card reader
Dekart SIM Manager (there's a special offer inside )
your SIM card PIN2 number.
a PC with Windows OS

A couple of words about PIN2, you'll need it for editing the FDN both with your phone menu and with Dekart SIM Manager. PIN2 must be entered beforehand or when applying such settings. Doing so prevents unauthorized users disabling the FDN list. The PIN2 is separate from the main PIN1 number and can be found on the plastic card you get from your mobile operator when you acquire the SIM.

You should keep in mind, that if you enter an incorrect PIN2 three times in a row, it will be locked. You can unblock PIN2 if you know PUK2. If you’re not sure what these numbers are, contact your mobile operator.

FDN made easy as 1-2-3

1. Insert the SIM into the SIM reader. You can see how to do it with the new Dekart SIM Reader here or the previous model here . Connect the SIM Reader to the USB hub, run SIM Manager and click on the "Read" button (on the left panel)

2. Switch to the "Fixed Dialing Numbers" section. Enter the names and numbers to the list on the right. These will be the only numbers the user can call after enabling the FDN mode.

The number of numbers (sorry for tautology) is limited by the capacity of your SIM card. Let's presume that you have to enter a large list of similar numbers. For example, all your corporate numbers start from 555-555-xxx - and have 3 random digits at the end. In this case, you can benefit from number templates. Just enter the "555555xxx" and only calls to numbers conforming to this template will be allowed.

Another common situation, you need to limit the calls to national numbers only. Enter your national prefix and replace the rest of digits by "x". That easy.

When you've finished the number list, click on the "Write" button on the left panel.

At this point you'll be asked for PIN2 number. Enter it carefully and remember that PIN2 will be locked after 3 attempts of entering the incorrect number. You should use PUK2 to unlock it. If you're unsure how to proceed, contact your mobile operator.

3. Now the FDN list is saved and you can enable the FDN mode. Go to the "SIM" menu and click on "Enable FDN".

You've done it! Now the SIM card will allow outgoing calls to the 'white list' numbers only. Happy calling!

1. Prepare the Dekart SIM reader and the SIM card. If you have small micro or nano SIM, you'll need the SIM adapters.

2. Take the usb cap off.

3. Remove the back cover.

4. If you have a small SIM, insert your SIM card into SIM adapter. The chip should be facing up.

5. Do you see the cut corner of the SIM (or SIM adapter)? Take the SIM card by the cut corner (chip facing down!) and insert it into the Dekart SIM reader.
Note: there is a small pictogram next to the SIM slot, that shows the way the SIM card should be inserted.

6. Great! You did it. Now connect the SIM reader to your computer and use Dekart software to manage the SIM.
